Farms Drive Fairmont, WV
"Own
a Piece of History" James Otis Watson, known as "The Father of
the West Virginia Coal Industry", purchased the land we call Fairmont Farms
in 1789. He and his wife, Matilda, bore ten children, two of which were named
James Edwin and Clarence Wayland. James O. began developing the estate and called
it "La Grange. There were many buildings on the premises such as barns, washhouses,
livestock pens, and workers' quarters. He lived there until his death in 1902.
His youngest son, Clarence (one of the founders of the Consolidation Coal Co.
and a U.S. senator), took over the property. During this period of high prosperity
for the coal industry, Clarence was able to remodel the estate in the Spanish
Mission style and named it Fairmont Farms. Many of the old farm structures were
replaced, and it was at this time that he commissioned Philadelphia architect
Horace Trumbauer to design a stable that was to be used to house and show his
famous show horse, world champion Lord Baltimore, and other prize winners such
as Kitty and My Maryland, which were exhibited in America and in Europe. (Trumbauer
was also the designer of the James Watson mansion on Fairmont Avenue). C. Watson
resided at Fairmont Farms until his death in 1940. The property was sold, and
the new owner divided the estate for resale. In 1941, the stable was renovated
into homes. The northern end was demolished and many of the materials used to
build a neighboring home. The middle section (this house) and the southern end
were separated and made into two homes. The blueprints of the transformation will
be left in the house. Several features of this house are original to the stable.
They include front and back stable doors, stones on either side of the barn doors
to keep the carriage wheels from damaging the doors, central Palladian arches,
seven foot square cupola, weather vane designed and made by E.A. Fish wisteria
growing in front, white iron fence in back between properties and additional sections
in attic (used to segregate hogs into their own areas now under gravel at the
side and back of the house), concrete floor under crawlspace, and stable doors
and stall doors stored in large front room upstairs. A collage of "Farms"
history hangs in the front entrance as well as pictures of the original stable
and Lord Baltimore in the master bedroom. This is a historic treasure which is
National Register eligible.
